NEWLY-FORMED Dudley Heathens endured a baptism of fire at Perry Barr on Wednesday - and have another injury concern ahead of next Tuesday's National League opener at Wolverhampton.
Already without Adam McKinna due to back bruising, Heathens lost their No.2 rider Ben Taylor after a spectacular accident in his first ride when he tangled with opponent Eddie Castro on the straight.
Taylor was able to walk off the track but was withdrawn from the remainder of the meeting with a wrist injury, and several of his team-mates suffered from first-night mechanical problems.

A big crowd turned out to witness the re-birth of the Heathens and there were certainly encouraging signs as five of the six remaining riders won at least one race, and the only one who did not, Tom Perry, gained in pace as the meeting went on.
But there was no denying the victory taken by the American tourists, who led for much of the match and look to have a real star of the future in 15-year-old Austin Novratil.

FANS turned out in massive numbers to cheer Dudley Heathens to a thrilling 49-41 win over Buxton in their opening National League clash of the season.
Club officials have apologised to supporters after selling out of programmes - there will be a reprint for collectors - almost half-an-hour before the start at their adopted Monmore Green home.
The standard of racing was first class and despite the scoreline, which saw Heathens claim all three points on offer, the outcome was in the balance for the bulk of the meeting.
Buxton hardly helped their own cause when both Adam Allott and Charles Wright touched the tapes and went from 15-metre handicaps.
Dudley skipper Lee Smart was involved in some sensational action as was Richard Franklin and impressive newcomer Tom Perry.
Said Perry: "I've really enjoyed it. I was well up for it, there was a great atmosphere and I really didn't know what to expect.
"The track was great and it's so nice to get a reception from the fans like I did."

DUDLEY Heathens went agonisingly close to a stunning Knockout Cup win at Scunthorpe but had to settle for a 46-44 first leg defeat on Friday.
Australian Jake Anderson enjoyed his best performance since arriving on British shores with a 15-point haul and fellow new signing Jon Armstrong impressed with 10.
Heathens were two-points up going into the last race but were turned over by a Scunthorpe 5-1 to send the Saints fans home happy - but Will Pottingers's men will still start the return at Wolverhampton on Tuesday, April 27, as favourites to make the semi-finals.
Said Pottinger: "If you'd offered me a two-point defeat in the first leg before the meeting I'd have taken it. I'm happy but it would have been even better if we'd managed to win.
"I would be disappointed if we failed to go through from the second leg at Wolverhampton, but we will take nothing for granted. It was a good team effort, especially as we were without former Scunthorpe rider Richard Franklin."
Heathens have brought forward their National League clash with Mildenhall by 24-hours - and switched the venue. They will now race at Wolverhampton on Tuesday, May 11, as Birmingham need the Wednesday date after a series of early season postponements.
The next Heathens action is at Buxton in the National League on Sunday with teenager Darryl Ritchings replacing the unavailable Tom Perry at reserve.

JAKE Anderson became the first Heathens rider of the new era to score a maximum as the National League newcomers picked up a useful point from Sunday's trip to Buxton.
Anderson, who came into the team as a replacement for the injured Adam McKinna, followed up his fine display at Scunthorpe on Friday with a five-ride unbeaten haul.
Heathens had to go into the meeting without impressive reserve Tom Perry due to a prior grasstrack booking, and they battled hard after a nightmare start in which they went 10-2 down.
Anderson won a tactical ride for double points in Heat 7 to dent Buxton's momentum, but the home side went into the last two heats eleven points up.
Needing to reduce that to six to gain a League point, Heathens collected a 5-0 in Heat 14 when both Charles Wright and Robert Branford failed to finish - and then Anderson teamed up with skipper Lee Smart for a 5-1 in Heat 15 to leave the visitors just two points adrift at the end.
Manager Will Pottinger said: "Jake rode really well and I'm delighted to get a point here against a strong Buxton side, especially with a couple of our riders having bike problems. It's been a really positive start to the season for us."

SKIPPER Lee Smart scored a faultless 15-point maximum as the Dudley Heathens swept past Scunthorpe and into the next round of the Knockout Cup.
Heathens trailed by two points from a close-fought first leg in Lincolnshire, but they dominated the return fixture taking the aggregate lead in Heat 4 and never looking back.
Smart, who has started the season in fine form, reeled off five race wins and there were also multiple successes for Jake Anderson and Jon Armstrong - whilst Richard Franklin dropped just one point, and Ashley Morris completed a solid top-five show.
An inexperienced Scunthorpe team were well served by Benji Compton, who won Heat 5 and scored four points from his tactical ride, and British Under-21 Final qualifier Steven Worrall won Heat 2 after Tom Perry had fallen, but the Heathens edged towards the 60-point mark and hit it when Franklin passed Compton on the line for second place in Heat 15.
Team boss Will Pottinger said: "I couldn't be happier with how the lads have performed. We had one or two early problems, but from Heat 6 we took an advantage in almost every race.
"Our top five were all really solid, our reserves scored to their average, and we can't ask for more than that. It was also great to see Jan O Pedersen here, and he was advising the lads straight away with things they can look at to get even better."

DUDLEY Heathens claimed a consolation point from their 46-44 defeat in a National League thriller at Rye House on Saturday.
Will Pottinger's men kept the scores close throughout the meeting with a brave and consistent display at one of the toughest venues in the country.
Skipper Lee Smart was once again impressive with 11 and Jake Anderson continued his recent improvement with a handy 8-point haul.
Heathens were 34-32 down but were level at 42-42 going into a last heat decider in front of plenty of travelling fans from the Black Country - including a coachload from Cradley Heath.
But the Cobras pulled off a 4-2 in the last to edge the match and send the Rye House fans home happy.
Boss Pottinger said: "I'd have taken a point before the meeting but after getting into a position to win the meeting it's a shame we didn't.
"It was a great effort by all the boys, even Ashley (Morris) who didn't score but he can look forward to a good meeting at Scunthorpe on Monday.
"I've never know emotion like it building up to that last race. All the boys really appreciated the travelling support from the Cradley and Dudley area, we couldn't have done it without them."

DUDLEY continued their impressive start to the season with a last gasp 47-43 National League victory at Scunthorpe on Monday evening.
Jake Anderson was in superb form for the Heathens with a 15-point maximum and he teamed up with Jon Armstrong (13+1) in the final heat 5-1 that clinched this well-deserved win.
The Midland side looked to be heading for a comfortable win as they led 33-27 after heat 10, but successive Scunthorpe 5-1s in races 11 and 12 quickly turned the match on its head.
Armstrong then took the chequered flag in a shared heat 13 and an Anderson/ Tom Perry 4-2 in the penultimate heat ensured the scores were level going into the last race.
When the tapes rose in the decider Saints star Gary Irving was excluded for a first bend fall and in the re-run Anderson and Armstrong held off Gary Beaton, with the three league points gained moving the Heathens up to second place in the National League table.

DUDLEY suffered an agonising last-gasp 46-44 National League defeat by Mildenhall at Monmore Green on Tuesday.
The Heathens had hauled themselves back into the meeting with plenty of grit and determination to force a last heat decider.
They were 36-30 down with four heats to go but Richard Franklin and Tom Perry pulled off a Heat 12 maximum.
And when Jake Anderson teamed up with Perry for a 4-2 in Heat 14 the scores were level with one race to go.
Heathens skipper Lee Smart, who had reeled off four straight wins, was partnered by the in-form Anderson - but Smart suffered the heartbreak of an engine failure and Barrie Evans won the meeting for the Fen Tigers.
Heathens boss Will Pottinger said: "I had a word with the boys during the interval and we went really close, I feel gutted.
"We had some bad luck and threw some points away, but to pull level with one race to go I thought we had saved the match.
"We will stay positive and work on the areas we need to improve, particularly our gating!"

DUDLEY Heathens got back to winning ways with a thrilling 51-41 win over reigning National League champions Bournemouth at Monmore Green.
Once again fans from throughout the Dudley Borough made the short trip across to Wolverhampton to back their team in massive numbers as the battle for a new stadium continues.
It was a solid all-round team performance from the Heathens, carrying the name of the famous old Cradley club.
They went into an early lead but Bournemouth continued to peg them back and it needed a spectacular late rally for Will Pottinger's men to claim maximum points.
On a thrilling night of high-speed drama Bournemouth used Mark Baseby for double points as a last throw of the dice in Heat 14 - but Heathens claimed the minor placings to secure the win.
However, the visitors still had a chance to claim a bonus point by losing by six or less - but Heathens skipper Lee Smart pulled off the win with Jon Armstrong third.
Reserve Tom Perry was in spectacular form for his 12-points and skipper Smart notched 11+1 - including a retirement.
Said Perry: "I really enjoyed myself, everything went really well for me and I was making much better starts.
"It was a great win for us, to beat the champions like that and it was great to see Ash (Ashley Morris) in the points."

DUDLEY suffered their first heavy defeat of the season with a 59-34 setback at Newport on Monday.
Heathens were hit by the loss of fans favourite Jon Armstrong before the meeting with an eye infection. They used the rider replacement facility which gleaned only four-points.
Boss Will Pottinger used Tom Perry as a tactical ride which didn't work out - but Lee Smart collected all six from his outing on double points.
Smart notched 17-points to top score for the Heathens and Perry scored 7.
Said Pottinger: "It was one of those days, everything just seemed to go against us.
"We have to put it down to experience and all part of the learning curve for our youngsters. And again I'd like to thank our wonderful travelling fans."
