DUDLEY Heathens started their season with a thrilling 45-45 draw at Stoke in a Midland Challenge.
The former Cradley club were without Ashley Morris who was riding for his Premier League club Edinburgh but they still managed to frustrate the home side.
New signing Adam Roynon was the last heat hero as he partnered inspirational skipper Jon Armstrong to a 5-1 to share the match after they were 44-40 down going into the decider.
Boss Will Pottinger said: "Before the meeting we weren't really sure what we could achieve here without Ash, but Stoke were also without Simon Lambert who is a top rider at this level.
"Adam Roynon had a disagreement with the start marshal and that seemed to wind him up for the rest of the meeting, he was unstoppable, and Armo as skipper was superb.
"It was a tough night for the reserves, Luke and Darryl, but I am generarlly very encouraged by what we have achieved and we are all looking forward to our big opening night against the USA Tourists at Wolverhampton on Tuesday. We are desperate to win the Travel Plus Trophy."

DUDLEY Heathens lifted the Travel Plus Trophy with a hard fought 49-37 win over the USA touring team at Monmore on Monday.
Winter signing Adam Roynon notched a perfect 15-point maximum for the former Cradley club who had to overcome the loss of skipper Jon Armstrong with rib damage after his first race.
They were behind in the early stages but from determined racing from Roynon and reserve Darryl Ritchings, who scored 8+1, saw them home in front of a bumper opening night crowd.
Boss Will Pottinger said: "We were worried we might lose but we managed to claw it back and Adam was unstoppable.
"It was a good meeting and all the lads will be happy to get a home meeting under their belt.
"We will have to keep a close check on Armo with his rib injury and we are all looking forward to the trip to Mildenhall in our first league meeting on Sunday."

DUDLEY Heathens went agonisingly close to a sensational away win in their opening National League meeting of the season but had to settle for a point from a 45-44 defeat at Mildenhall.
The former Cradley club, who took a bumper following to the West Row track, found themselves 10-2 down after a nightmare start but managed to get back into the meeting thanks mainly to in-form Adam Roynon, Ashley Morris and guest Barrie Evans.
And they took the lead for the first time in the meeting in Heat 13 when Roynon and Evans teamed up for a maximum 5-1.
But the home side then claimed a 4-2 to take a one-point lead into the last heat decider.
James Brundle was the hero for the Fen Tigers as he took the chequered flag ahead of Roynon and Evans to spark big celebrations for the home fans.
Heathens boss Will Pottinger said: “I’ve got mixed feelings really, to get so close to a win and miss out in the last heat is a bit disappointing, but after we were 10-2 down after the first two races then I have to say it’s a good effort. “And speaking to some of our supporters afterwards they seemed to be feeling the same way, a shame we couldn’t win but to get a point from our first away meeting is a good effort. There are lots of positives.”
Heathens now prepare to launch their bid for the first National League silverware of the season when they host Buxton in the first leg of the National League Shield at Wolverhampton on Tuesday (7.30).

DUDLEY Heathens have given themselves a chance of winning the National League Shield with a hard fought 53-37 win over Buxton at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.
Locally based teenager Ashley Morris scored a stunning 15-point maximum for the former Cradley club including back-to-back wins in the last two races to swing the tie heavily in Heathens’ favour.
New signing Adam Roynon continued his fine start to his Heathens career by dropping just one point to an opposing rider in five outings.
And guest Barrie Evans did a good job in place of the injured Jon Armstrong with a handy 9+1 contribution.
But Buxton threatened to keep it close with some determined racing from Adam Allott (10) and Rob Branford (8) and it needed three successive maximums to sway the tie in Heathens’ favour.
Boss Pottinger said: “I’m pleased with a 16-point lead because it was looking close for a big part of the meeting and we threw some points away.
“But to go to Buxton with an advantage like this gives us hope and encouragement that we can win the Shield which would be a great start to the season for us.
“And I’m really pleased for Ash (Morris), he was brilliant all night and Adam did a fantastic job for us again.”

DUDLEY Heathens conquered last year’s treble winners Buxton Hitmen to claim the National League Shield on Sunday.
And the former Cradley club did it in style with a 46-44 win on the day to win by 18-points on aggregate and claim their first official national title since Cradley won the Premier League Fours in 1995.
Winter signing Adam Roynon continued his fairytale start to his Heathens career with an unbeaten 11+1 score from four outings and guest rider Byron Bekker, in for the injured Jon Armstrong, did a fine job with 8.
Heathens had one hand on the silverware after their 53-37 win at Wolverhampton in Tuesday’s first leg but refused to take victory for granted and worked hard for their points, watched by a big number of travelling fans.
Boss Will Pottinger said: “It’s fantastic to win our first piece of official silverware, everybody did a great job in the team and thanks to our guest Byron Bekker for a great job.
“The reserves scored well and Adam was fantastic. To win on the day is a real bonus for us.”

HEATHENS were hit by a late burst from the Birmingham Bulls as they were beaten in a challenge match at Perry Barr on Sunday.
The visitors trailed by just five points with four heats to go, but they conceded three 5-1s in the last four heats as the home side made the final score more emphatic – despite Ashley Morris winning a tactical ride in the penultimate race.
Heat wins were thin on the ground for the Heathens as the home side dominated in that department with Jack Hargreaves scoring a full 15-point maximum.
Heathens’ other race winners were Darryl Ritchings in Heat 2 and Richard Franklin in Heat 11, with four of their riders finishing with identical totals of 5+1, and skipper Jon Armstrong took five rides on his return from injury.

JON Armstrong gave his best performance in Heathens colours as Dudley edged out a powerhouse Scunthorpe side 47-43 in a National League thriller at their adopted Wolverhampton track on Tuesday.
The skipper notched 17-points from a possible 18 in a majestic display which inspired his colleagues to keep the Saints at bay.
Heathens went into the meeting without star man Adam Roynon and the visitors were also able to call on the services of trump card Richie Worrall for seven outings.
But despite the odds clearly being against the former Cradley club they displayed fantastic team spirit to dig deep and pull off a wonderful win.
Boss Will Pottinger said: "In my opinion we have just beaten one of the best teams in the league and whilst it's disappointing that we only got two-points instead of three, we're really happy. "For Scunthorpe to have Richie Worrall at reserve means they have a massive advantage but I thought we showed great character. We were up against it, but we managed to pull it off and our thanks again go to our supporters for their backing.  "Armo was brilliant and he won the meeting for us, but everyone played their part and our 5-1 with Armo and Ash (Morris) in the last race was well deserved."
Scunthorpe were angry with the decision to exclude Steve Worrall from Heat 15, with the scores level at 42-42. However, video evidence proved referee Tony Steele was correct and Heathens completed a well deserved win.
Club bosses Pottinger and Nigel Pearson are in the market for a new signing to replace Roynon and an announcement could be made this week.

Heat 15 ABANDONED DUE TO DEMOLITION OF FENCE - RESULT STANDS

HEATHENS won a bruising Knockout Cup tie with Belle Vue 45-39 at Monmore Green on Tuesday.
Both Ashley Morris and Kyle Newman were involved in horrific crashes for the former Cradley club but came away relatively unscathed.
Sadly Belle Vue man Kyle Howarth suffered a collarbone injury in a hard fought Heat 14 which saw the fence damaged and the meeting abandoned because of the 10pm curfew.
Once again there was some breathtaking racing in front of a bumper crowd made up of Heathens fans with little travelling support.
Heathens boss Will Pottinger said: "We're pleased to get a six-point lead for the return leg.  "It's hard to say whether we've done enough, but it's nice to have a lead to take up there. We had to work hard for it and credit to all the boys, they've given us everything. "We had some misfortune along the way but so did Belle Vue. It was a cracking meeting."

HEATHENS pulled off the comeback of all comebacks to snatch all three points from a National League thriller against Hackney.
For much of the meeting the home side were up against it against the fast-starting visitors, who had a major weapon at reserve in Shane Hazelden.
With five races to go, Heathens trailed 26-34 – but they then hit the Hawks with three successive 5-1s, two of them involving their own reserve Darryl Ritchings, who enjoyed his best performance in the club’s colours.
A fourth 5-1 would have followed in Heat 14 but Ashley Morris cruelly ground to a halt on the final bend leaving Ritchings to win the race to protect what had become a four point lead.
Dudley needed another 5-1 from the last race to secure maximum points from the meeting – and they got it in dramatic fashion with the impressive Kyle Newman leading from the start, and skipper Jon Armstrong blasting around ex-Heathen Barrie Evans off the final bend to steal second place on the line.
Heathens club partner Gary Patchett said: “We had a talk with the boys at the interval, nobody was happy at that stage, and the response was absolutely remarkable. They pulled it out of the bag superbly, and it was great to see the fans’ reaction.  “We didn’t have a man of the match sponsor this time, but if we had then it would certainly have gone to Darryl Ritchings. His performance was vital, and I’m personally delighted for him.”

DUDLEY Heathens are through to the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup after a magnificent result at Belle Vue on Wednesday.
Conventional wisdom was that Heathens’ six-point first leg lead would come under considerable threat at Kirkmanshulme Lane – but they always had the better of the return fixture.
It was a rock-solid Dudley performance with nine race wins and, also impressively, the only last place amongst their top five came when the otherwise outstanding Tom Perry was disqualified from the last race for bringing down Byron Bekker.
The home side suffered from a host of falls, captain Bekker setting an unhappy tone for them when he came to grief in Heat 1 as the Heathens opened up with maximum points.
The visitors went six points clear with a second 5-1 from skipper Jon Armstrong and Richard Franklin in Heat 5, and by the time the Colts’ top man Jason Garrity won a tactical ride in Heat 11 the tie was already virtually beyond them.
Heathens had it wrapped up in the next race with Perry’s third win of the night backed up by Darryl Ritchings in third place – but they kept the pressure on to ensure they won the meeting as well as on aggregate.
In-form Kyle Newman took Heat 13 after Garrity crashed, and the home side’s miserable night was summed up when Ashley Morris and Danny Stoneman carded a 5-0 in Heat 14 after Adam McKinna fell and Chris Widman ground to a halt.
An awarded 5-1 to the Colts in Heat 15 after the Perry/Bekker tangle was scant consolation for them, with the Heathens now looking forward to a last-four tie.
