DUDLEY Heathens launched their new season in style with a shock 45-41 win at bitter rivals Mildenhall in the National Shield first leg.
The revamped Heathens side provided six race winners at West Row against the team which beat them in controversial circumstances for the league title last October.  And whilst revenge was sweet, boss Will Pottinger was quick to guard against complacency.  He said: "This was obviously a very sweet victory for us, but we still have the second leg to come at Wolverhampton on April 30 and it will mean nothing if we don't finish the job then.  "But for us to have six race winners when we had five riders on debut at one of the toughest places to visit was brilliant, full credit to the boys.  "It's a sweet win for Lewis Blackbird at his former club and we could have won by more but for his two exclusions and retirements for some of the younger lads."
Now the former Cradley club are expecting a bumper crowd for their opening home meeting against Coventry at Monmore this Tuesday in the first leg of the Travel Plus Trophy.

REVAMPED Heathens continued their superb start to the season with a brilliant 60-35 Travel Plus Trophy first leg win over Coventry at Monmore on Tuesday.
Skipper Ashley Morris was unbeaten from his five outings with 13+2 and one of the many new signings Lewis Blackbird notched 13 on his home debut.  But once again it was a solid all-round team display with 15-year-old reserves Nathan Greaves and Max Clegg winning the hearts of Heathens fans.
Fans packed the Monmore terraces to see Heathens put themselves in a commanding position to claim the silverware in the return leg at Brandon on Friday, April 19.  Said Morris: “It feels good to get a paid maximum but more importantly I’m really pleased with the way the team has started the season.  “It’s important for me to be a genuine No.1 and I feel I did that tonight, but we have come together superbly as a team and I’m really pleased.  “The new signings have been superb and it was a great night for the team and we really appreciate the support from our supporters.”

DUDLEY Heathens wrapped up the Travel Plus Trophy with a 106-79 aggregate triumph after a thrilling 46-44 victory over Coventry Storm at Brandon.  In what was a tight affair throughout, it took a last heat 5-1 from Paul Starke and Lewis Blackbird to secure victory on the night and maintain their winning streak in 2013.  And after the meeting, Starke was delighted.  He said: "I'm super stoked with that and I'm sure the whole team is as well.  "Heat 15 was brilliant and the team rode really well, so it was a really good result."
In the absence of regular No.1 Ashley Morris, stand-in skipper Blackbird and Starke led the charge throughout - combining for 24 points and six race wins.  Yet they received able support from middle order man Dan Greenwood (7) whilst guesting No.1 Tony Atkin and Gareth Isherwood made useful contributions.
Youngsters Max Clegg and Nathan Greaves both endured frustrating evenings, but continued to plug away to add some points from reserve to ensure the large travelling Heathens contingent were sent home happy.

ROBERT Branford lifted the British Under 21 title on a night of memorable racing hosted by Dudley Heathens at Monmore Green on Tuesday.
In front of a bumper crowd, Britain's most talented young riders put on a tremendous display of close action which eventually saw new Coventry signing Branford leave victorious.
Jason Garrity and Kyle Howarth had looked set to contest a two-horse race after they topped the score-charts - Garrity edging ahead of Howarth courtesy of his victory when the duo met in heat 17

Yet Branford shot out of gate two in the final before holding off Howarth to take the chequered flag.
The impressive Garrity eventually took third place courtesy of a last lap overtake on Heathens skipper Ashley Morris who bounced back from a heavy crash in his opening ride to come within a whisker of the top three.  And Morris was frustrated not to make the rostrum after a tough evening. He said: I'm really annoyed to be honest. After getting so close it is hard to take a place in the top three slipped away like that.   "It was obviously good to get that chance to get on the podium, especially after everything that happened on the night but I'm still going away pretty disappointed."
Morris' Heathens team-mates Dan Greenwood and Max Clegg both scored solidly - ending with six and three points respectively - whilst former Dudley men Darryl Ritchings and Danny Stoneman worked hard for their scores of eight and seven.
Last year's runner-up Tom Perry made the semi-finals on his return to his parent club only to see his night end in unfortunate fashion with a fall whilst challenging for a place in the final.

DUDLEY Heathens retained the National Shield for the third straight season with a 51-39 victory over rivals Mildenhall in the second leg at Monmore Wood Carrying a four point lead from the first leg at West Row, the former Cradley club made a slow start with several mistakes pegging them back.Yet as the meeting wore on their class shone through - with back to back 5-1s in heats 11 and 12 proving decisive.
And team boss Will Pottinger was pleased to see his side lift the Shield once again.  He said: "It's the third successive season where we've won the National Shield, so it's a really pleasing result against a strong Mildenhall side.  "After a difficult start the lads rode really well in the end, and I'm really pleased with the team performance."
Lewis Blackbird continued his sparkling form against his former club - while Paul Starke and guesting No.1 Robert Branford provided able support. Reserves Max Clegg and Nathan Greaves both shone to score paid nine and paid eight respectively with some exciting overtaking needed to earn those scores.
Gareth Isherwood bounced back from a heat one fall to make another vital contribution, whilst Dan Greenwood picked himself up from a nasty crash of his own in his opening ride to complete a well-rounded team performance

DUDLEY Heathens kicked off their National League season in ideal fashion with a 56-36 triumph over Kings Lynn at Monmore Wood.
Heathens certainly did not have things all their own way against a depleted Young Stars side, with three 5-1s in the closing stages required to ensure they took all three league points.  A string of falls in the early stages prevented the home side from opening up any substantial advantage - and they were also forced to contend most of the meeting with just five riders after Nathan Greaves suffered a hand injury in a Heat 4 horror smash. But Lewis Blackbird continued his inspired form with an effortless maximum to lead the side to victory, whilst Ashley Morris was also unbeaten with the exception of a Heat 10 exclusion.

Gareth Isherwood dropped just one point in the middle order following a classy display, whilst reserve Max Clegg bagged a hard-fought 11+1 on a busy night.
No.4 Dan Greenwood also recovered from a tough start to notch vital race wins in his final two rides to ensure Dudley kicked off their league campaign with a victory.  And team boss Will Pottinger was pleased to see his side eventually emerge victorious after a difficult night.  He said: "Overall I suppose you look at the level of the victory and you have to be happy, but it was a bit too close for comfort at times during the meeting.  "There are definitely things to work on, but we are pleased to take all three points in the end."

Julie Lewis Memorial - Top two from each team
Skidmore, Perry, Morris, Crang

DUDLEY Heathens suffered a 51-42 defeat at the hands of Redcar in the Julie Lewis Memorial Trophy.
Having fallen 12 behind after 11 races, the visiting Heathens staged a late fightback following a Paul Starke tactical ride win - but they were unable to edge victory against a strong Bears side.  Starke led the charge with 13 points from the middle order, whilst Ashley Morris and returning Tom Perry notched paid double figures.  Max Clegg enjoyed another strong night from the reserve berth, but with Dan Greenwood missing the side just fell short.  But Will Pottinger was pleased with the performance and believes it was ideal preparation for Tuesday's KO Cup tie against Buxton.  He said: "It was a good run out for the lads ahead of Tuesday's match against Buxton.  "It was a good performance considering Redcar fielded a very strong side, and to run them within nine points was a good result."

DUDLEY kicked-off their KO Cup campaign in perfect style with a 55-39 victory over Buxton at Monmore.
Three 5-1s in the opening seven races put Heathens firmly in control, before they nullified two Buxton tactical rides in Heats 9 and 11 to leave the side well placed ahead of the second leg in Derbyshire on June 23.  And boss Will Pottinger was pleased with the display.  He said: "We're really happy with how things went, and we looked a lot better than we did in our last home meeting where we threw a lot of points away.  "It was good to get another home meeting under our belt and we're looking forward to getting back on track against Coventry next Tuesday."
Paul Starke top scored for the former Cradley club with a classy 16, whilst skipper Ashley Morris also scored a hard-fought 11+1.  But Gareth Isherwood and youngster Max Clegg stole the show with outstanding performances to make up for the absence of in-form ace Lewis Blackbird.

DUDLEY put in a classy performance to take a comprehensive 62-30 victory over local rivals Coventry Storm at Monmore Wood.  Three 5-1s in the opening four heats put Heathens firmly in control from the off before they eventually took a comfortable win.  And team boss Will Pottinger was delighted with his side’s performance after many predicted a tight affair.  He said: “We’re absolutely delighted with that performance, especially when you consider we only had five of our usual side.  “Four of the lads made double figures, another was paid for double figures and you can't ask for much more than that - it was a great performance.”  With Gareth Isherwood and Dan Greenwood both missing through injury, Ashley Morris and Lewis Blackbird put in superb performances to lead the side.
Paul Starke again stepped up with a determined display to make 13, whilst Max Clegg impressed with three race wins on his way to 12+1.  His reserve partner Nathan Greaves also fought hard to end with his best score of the season so far.  Former Heathens man Darryl Ritchings notched two paid wins on a guest appearance as the former-Cradley club outclassed their opponents to bag their second win in two National League outings.

DUDLEY boss Will Pottinger was pleased with his side's performance after they suffered a narrow 51-41 defeat against Berwick in a Challenge match.
With Lewis Blackbird joining Gareth Isherwood and Dan Greenwood on the injury list at the last minute following a crash riding for Scunthorpe last night, Heathens travelled to Shielfield with a heavily depleted side.
Yet they were able to give a strong Berwick Raiders side a tough test - and Pottinger was happy with the display.  He said: "We were happy with the performance to be honest as we were very depleted with Lewis Blackbird injuring his shoulder at Scunthorpe last night.  "Running a strong Berwick team within ten points is very respectable, and the young lads Max Clegg and Nathan Greaves learnt a lot at a track they had never visited before."
Former skipper Adam Roynon put in an excellent performance as he returned in the No.1 race jacket, whilst Paul Starke continued his excellent form with a double figure contribution.
Steve Worrall also completed a powerful top three as he made a guest appearance, whilst youngsters Nathan Greaves and Max Clegg also put in promising displays from reserve.

DUDLEY Heathens battled to a 56-36 victory over arch rivals Mildenhall on a night of exciting action at Monmore Green.  Two 5–1s in the opening four races gave the former Cradley club an early lead - bur the visiting Fen Tigers remained only eight behind after 11 heats.
Heathens came on strong in the closing stages to take victory by a comprehensive 20 point margin and secure all three National League points.  And boss Will Pottinger was delighted with the win.  He said: "It was a really good result. The winning margin of 20 points was very pleasing especially as we were only eight ahead going into the last third of the meeting.  "We're really happy to get the three points and there were some very good performances."
Ashley Morris and Lewis Blackbird both put in excellent performances - suffering just one defeat apiece and displaying excellent team riding to take 5-1s in heats 13 and 15 as they prepare for Sunday's National League Pairs'.  No.3 Paul Starke also put in another superb display - only being denied a maximum by losing his steel shoe when leading in his second ride - whilst Max Clegg bolstered the lower order with a double figure return from reserve.
Nathan Greaves, Dan Greenwood and Gareth Isherwood all made useful contributions despite not enjoying their finest evenings to ensure Heathens maintained their perfect National League record.

Dudley Heathens won local bragging rights with a 49-41 victory over Wolves in the BBC WM Trophy at Monmore Green.
The in-form Heathens put in a battling display in front of a bumper crowd to come out on top against a strong Wolverhampton Select line-up. And team boss Will Pottinger was delighted to see his side take victory. He said: "I'm really happy with that performance - Wolves were handicapped when they lost Tom Perry due to a shoulder injury early on, but it was up to us to take advantage of that. "The top three put in a really good performance as usual. Dan Greenwood looked a lot better and the reserves chipped in as well, so it was an encouraging evening."
Ironically it was Wolves asset Ashley Morris who led the former-Cradley club with a majestic display from the No 1 position. The Heathens skipper was involved in some exciting racing - most notably a memorable third to first ride in heat 13 to seal victory. Lewis Blackbird also bagged  eight points despite a fall in his final ride - yet it was Paul Starke who top scored with a classy performance which included three race wins.
Youngster Nathan Greaves put in a very encouraging showing to notch paid eight, whilst his reserve partner Max Clegg also put in a solid return despite two falls whilst pushing hard for extra points.
Middle order man Dan Greenwood worked extremely hard for his points as he continues to get back up to speed following his shoulder injury, whilst Gareth Isherwood made a useful contribution at No 2.
Supporters were also treated to an exciting second-half meeting with Lewis Blackbird taking victory in the Gary Petersen Memorial Trophy.

Dudley completed the double over rivals Wolverhampton with a 54-39 victory in the Les Pottinger Memorial Trophy at Monmore Green.
Against a strong Wolves side, Heathens put in a powerful display to maintain their excellent form. And boss Will Pottinger was in jubilant mood following another victory. He said: "I'm really happy with another win against Wolves, and they've been two really valuable meetings. Lewis Blackbird and Paul Starke were both in excellent form, and the other lads chipped in to make sure we did enough.
"The lads have proved over the last two meetings we're a good team. The signs are promising an we're hoping to keep going as we are to go a long way this season. Lewis Blackbird spearheaded the former-Cradley Club with a faultless 15 point maximum whilst Paul Starke also put in an all-action display and suffered only one defeat.
Skipper Ashley Morris also returned eight vital points whilst the remaining quartet of Max Clegg, Nathan Greaves, Gareth Isherwood and Dan Greenwood all made useful contributions.

HEATHENS star Lewis Blackbird lifted the F.A.S.T Golden Hammer on a memorable night in front of a bumper crowd at Monmore Green.
The in-form Dudley man held his nerve in the final heat to edge victory by a single point and become the first home rider to win the prestigious event since it returned in 2010.  And he was delighted after adding yet another trophy to his growing collection before dedicating the win to the Heathens supporters.  Said Blackbird: “I'm absolutely over the moon - it was great to win that, everything is going well for me and my hard work is starting to pay off.  “It's a nice one to win for the fans. They've given me a warm welcome this year and made it one of the best years of my racing career, so that's for them."
Despite taking victory, Blackbird was pushed all the way by Kyle Newman and Steve Worrall who both ended just one off the top spot on thirteen points, with Newman taking second place following a run-off.
Two of the pre-meeting favourites Paul Starke and Ashley Morris both saw their chances all but ended by opening ride falls, although they both battled back to end just outside the top three on eleven.
Talented Australian Brady Kurtz also notched eleven having been involved in some exciting racing, whilst the likes Darryl Ritchings, James Sarjeant, Max Clegg and Dan Greenwood all put in solid displays on a night of close action.

Bronze Helmet
Boxall beat Blackbird

DUDLEY overcame a resilient Kent side to take a 53-39 victory over the Kings on an entertaining night at Monmore Green.
Despite entering the meeting as firm favourites, Heathens were made to work extremely hard to preserve their perfect home record before eventually securing all three National League points.
And after encountering plenty of misfortune, boss Will Pottinger was pleased to see his side emerge unscathed to take the win.
Said Pottinger: "I was sort of expecting us to be a bit slow to start with as we haven't ridden together as a team for three weeks, and with Kent winning their first meeting 24 hours earlier we knew it was going to be difficult.
"Thankfully we got the result in the end after a solid team performance. We got another three points, we remain unbeaten at home and move on to a busy weekend."
Skipper Ashley Morris was the star man for the former-Cradley club, reeling off four consecutive wins in his final four rides including a sensational last bend dive underneath Steve Boxall on the final lap of heat 15.
Lewis Blackbird and Paul Starke also made double figures to continue their strong form - although Blackbird was unable to take the Bronze Helmet from Boxall in their match race before the meeting got underway.
Dan Greenwood and Gareth Isherwood both battled hard to make vital contributions, whilst Nathan Greaves stepped up with a promising showing at reserve.
The hosts did notably feel the absence of his in-form reserve partner Max Clegg - and they will be hoping he makes a speedy recovery with a busy month ahead.
