DUDLEY Heathens went close to a sensational win at Plymouth on Friday – but they had to settle for a consolation point.
Will Pottingers men went down 49-43 with reserve Tom Perry in fine form on his first ever visit to the Devon track. He notched 13+2 from seven outings to delight the visiting fans from the Black Country who had made the long trip down the M5.
Heathens kept the scores close for the bulk of the meeting despite the loss of reserve Darryl Ritchings who was leading Heat 2 before crashing out of the race. He took no further part in the meeting thanks to bad bruising.
Going into the last race Heathens still had a chance of at least a draw but veteran duo Seemond Stephens and Mark Simmonds had the last word for the Devils.
Boss Pottinger said: “I’m happy with a point, the track as good for gaters and we aren’t a team of gaters so we did well to get a point.
“Darryl was looking good when he was leading Heat 2 when he took off and he is battered and bruised. Overall we can feel satisfied with our efforts, we are mainly a young team.”

DEPLETED Dudley staged a late rally to pull off a brilliant 53-39 National League win at struggling Weymouth on Friday.
Former Wildcats duo Jon Armstrong (15+1) and Lee Smart (13+1) topped the Heathens scorecard - but there was also a dream debut for Aussie teenager Micky Dyer who notched 8+3.
Heathens were hit by bad luck in the build-up to the meeting with Richard Franklin pulling out through illness and Tom Perry broke down on his way to Dorset.
Boss Will Pottinger was forced to plot his tactics carefully with the rider-replacement facility in operation for Franklin and local youngster Ross Walter stood in for Perry.
Heathens were strong at the end and secured the victory when they pulled off a 4-4 in the penultimate race when Weymouth used a tactical ride and the visitors remained 10-points up.
Boss Pottinger said: "I know Weymouth have been struggling, but after all our problems on the day of the meeting I'm delighted to come away with the win and four more league points. It could have gone horribly wrong for us.
"It was a fine performance and I'm particularly pleased for Micky Dyer on his debut. He looked good and I'm sure our fans are looking forward to seeing him at Wolves on Tuesday when we face King's Lynn.
"Armo and Lee were awesome and Ashley (Morris) did a great job at reserve. I'm so pleased to pull through with the win.
"I had a nightmare day. Richard Franklin's dad called me to say he was ill and then Tom broke down and got as far as Birdlip. We could have dropped points but we were all determined."

DUDLEY Heathens continued their surge towards the National League play-offs with a 63-32 win over King's Lynn in front of another bumper crowd at Wolverhampton.
Fans' favourite Jon Armstrong notched his first unbeaten score in Heathens colours with 14+1 from five outings and Tom Perry marked his last appearance in the reserve slot before moving into the main body of the team with an unbeaten 9+3.
New signing Micky Dyer won the hearts of Heathens fans with two wins in his 8-point score with the outcome never in doubt.
And even though the scoreline was one sided, there was once again some excellent racing to entertain the crowd on a well prepared track.
Maximum man Armstrong said: "It's a nice feeling to be unbeaten but it was a good all-round team display.
"This is a great club to be involved with, the fans are great and long may it continue."

DUDLEY Heathens continued their dramatic push for a National League play-off place with a stunning 49-41 win at King's Lynn on Sunday.
Jon Armstrong was unbeaten by an opposing rider to delight the travelling Heathens fans who swelled the crowd.
But the win came at a cost and the club are now sweating on the fitness of key reserve Richard Franklin after an untidy spill.
Boss Will Pottinger said: "Our thoughts go to Richard who has been taken to hospital as a precaution, hopefully he will be fine but he was struggling for breath at one stage.
"We dedicated the win to Rich. The way we hit three straight 5-1 maximums to win it at the end was amazing and I'm proud of all the boys. It's a great result and now we have to beat the Isle of Wight at Birmingham on Wednesday."
Armstrong carded 13+2 from five outings and Byron Bekker proved to be the perfect guest for the absent Lee Smart, who was riding for his Premier League club Stoke, with 13+1.

IN-FORM Dudley Heathens moved into the National League play-off zone with a thoroughly convincing win over the Isle of Wight at Perry Barr.
Heathens were rampant from the word go as they hammered home 5-1s in the first two races, with James Sarjeant keen to impress on his return to the team as a guest.
The Islanders' sole resistance came from an early race win by Danny Warwick and a good effort by Nick Simmons to win Heat 5 for double-points - but three 5-1s to the Heathens put them in total control and set for an emphatic win.
Jon Armstrong was unbeaten from four rides whilst Tom Perry and Micky Dyer put in some superb overtaking moves to delight the large crowd - with the Islander's late response being a last-heat 5-1 to deny maximums for Dyer and skipper Lee Smart.

DUDLEY Heathens have moved into second place in Speedway's National League after scorching to a 62-32 win over Scunthorpe at Wolverhampton on Tuesday.
Skipper Lee Smart continued his stunning run of form with a perfect 12-points score from four outings in a solid all-round effort for the former Cradley club. Jon Armstrong notched 10+1 and Tom Perry 9+4 in the tricky number three spot.
Boss Will Pottinger revealed: "The team spirit is excellent and, fair play to Lee, he's busy right now and said he didn't mind if I left him out of Heat 15. That gave me the chance to put Tom (Perry) in for an extra ride.
"It's nice to see a solid scorechart and our recent form is awesome, we are the form team of the National League at the moment.
"I was impressed by Steve Worrall at reserve for Scunthorpe, he got the Monmore track weighed up well but we had all seven riders on form which is very pleasing.
"It's just a shame we don't have another meeting until August 10 when we go to the Isle of Wight."
