MATCH REPORT...

Well this was it - the first match at Dudley Wood! The track was in tip-top condition after some delays with the weather which was some of the worst on record. On this afternoon though the sun came out for a crowd estimated to be around 12,000!
The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Jack Price did the honours and opened the meeting at around 2.30pm (The meeting had to be held during the afternoon because the lighting was not yet finished and the Government had restrictions on artificial lighting anyway).

The track held up well throughout the meeting considering the very bad weather of that 1947 winter which delayed preparation proir to the opening, so well in fact that the track record for that first meeting was set-up in the scratch race final - won by Les Beaumont in a time of 81.6 seconds.

Les and Ray Beaumont were the stars with some fine team riding gaining maximum points in the three races they were paired together. Les in particular looked in unbeatable form apart from heat 4 when he clipped the back wheel of Phil Malpass's bike and fell.

Sadly in the second-half final Eric Irons fell and injured his knee and was out for the next three matches. Also interesting to note that this was the only home meeting for Stan Crouch who never pulled on the Cradley body colour again.
