He was offered a place at Dudley Wood in the Heathens Provincial League side to further his career in 1962 having his first match on 10th September 1962, he scored 2 points.
He only had one more appearance that year, at Bradford on 2nd October.
John was taken on full time in 1963 riding at reserve and noted at that time for his green jumper over his leathers, following Cradley's number one at that time Ivor Brown with his white jumper.
Always well turned out, never a star though with his best score - a maximum of six points from his 2 rides against Long Eaton on 3rd June 1963.
John was eventually replaced by Ivor Davies and had a year out before going back to Oxford for just one outing in 1965, despite scoring 5 points against Sheffield in the opening meeting he decided to hang up his leathers.
