Full name: Les Rumsey
Career Record with Cradley
from the Cradley Speedway Database
League winners medal with Canterbury in 1978.
Les started racing at the age of 11 when
his dad bought him a 155cc James for his birthday, he rode that in a
field near his home until he was 13. He then got a 250cc Dot Trials
bike. If February 1969 he found out about the Kent Youth Motorcycle
Club. He entered their trial the next day and finished second to Dave
Jessup, so he sold the trials bike and bought a 200cc grasstrack bike
which he rode for 3 seasons and won the club championship twice.
(Thanks to Speedway Plus for their
interview with Les.)
Sales Manager for a local company in Whitstable, Kent. It's amazing the number
of people I have met, through work, who used to go to Canterbury Speedway.
I live just outside Canterbury at Dunkirk and have 2 children, daughter Julia -
single and son David - married to Mel. Have 3 grand children - Rachel, Amy and
Hobbies and interests:
Enjoy watching motor sports, golf and cricket. Enjoy gardening, especially growing vegetables.
Like watching the over 30 different species of birds that visit the garden feeders, just wish they didn't cost so much to feed!
I don't really have any involvement in Speedway these days, apart from going to the odd meeting, but was heavily involved in Grasstrack when my son rode for 12 years. For the last 4 years my time in the summer is spent travelling to CZ Republic, Germany and Holland with Rob Dolman who competes in the European Veteran Long Track Series along with the likes of Paul Evitts and Neville Tatum. He has won it the last 3 years and is leading the series this year. Next meeting is Pffarkirchen - south east of Munich - next week.
Our thanks to Karl Fiala for the updates on his wonderful 'Where are they now series'.
