Profile...

Graham Coombes was allocated to Cradley during the close season of 1966/67 from Newcastle. He was never to become a heatleader or a number one, but provided more than 500 points in the League and Cup over three seasons and was a solid scoring second string.

Before Cradley, Coombes had turned out briefly for Norwich, Belle Vue, Sunderland, Glasgow and eventually had a slightly longer stay at Newcastle. After a season with the Diamonds though, he arrived at the Wood and settled in as opening heat partner to the great Ivor Brown. He managed a six point-plus average in his first season and then improved that to almost seven the following year. His best performances were often against Wolverhampton, including a combined 18 point haul in the 1968 Dudley-Wolves trophy.

He hinted at leaving in 1968, but returned for another season which was to be his last. Suffered from a little inconsistency, which frustrated at times, but left at the end of '69 on very good terms. His average fell in his last season, and he spent time at reserve. Despite a good enough year to still deserve credit and praise, not just for his points but for his 100% effort, style and enthusiasm, he'd had enough. He went home to New Zealand after winning many friends and describing his time with the Heathens as "three happy seasons".
