Profile...

Just like his brother Les, Ray started his speedway career at the 1946 Tiger Stevenson Training School.  Ray did have five matches for Birmingham in 1947 but joined his brother at Dudley Wood in June. His first match was away at Plymouth on 12th June, he scored 3 points and 2 bonus. He went on to achieve an average of almost six points per match but this dropped to just over 4 in 1948.
Struggling when the Heathens went into Division 2 Ray moved back to the third Division with Tamworth in May 1949.  He stayed with the Hounds in 1950 before moving to Cardiff in 1951.

Ray was tragically killed in a track accident on 16th August 1956 not while riding Speedway but on the Grasstrack circuit. He and brother Les were both keen grasstrackers as well as able Speedway stars. Ray laid his bike down during a meeting in Cornwall to avoid a fallen rider ahead. He was tragically hit from behind by another approaching rider and died later.
