Stan Stevens started riding during the winter of 1958-59 at Rye House where he
was the star pupil
He had his first season with Rayleigh in 1960 where he was voted best of the
newcomers in 1959 riding in the Southern Area League. With the club
struggling with poor crowds he was sold to Cradley in June 1961 and promptly went out and won his first race - four days later he rode for the Heathens in a Challenge match at Yarmouth and scored a maximum.
He was with Cradley for two seasons. He never really showed the promise with the
Heathens that he had in those early days, however he was always a steady scorer,
though his form slumped a little in 1962. Stan joined New Cross in 1963
then Southampton after their closure before spending most of his career with
West Ham. In 1970 Stan was injured in the Lokeren crash which claimed the lives
of a number of riders. He remained with West Ham until the early 70s
before dropping down to the second division he carried on riding with various
division 2 clubs until hanging up his leathers in 1976.
