Derek was a teenage prospect at Sun Street, Stoke in 1951, doing second half races, he made his debut in July of that year against Motherwell but he didn't get another chance in the team until the end of the season when he had two rides at reserve against Liverpool and won them both!
He was included in the 1952 Potters team but on 13th June he rode at Dudley Wood in a Midland Riders Championship Qualifier and impressed everyone with a 10 point score from his 5 rides.
He was a bit hit and miss with the Potters and accepted an offer from Cradley at the end of August 1952.
12 matches for the Heathens from 30th August until 11th October saw his average increase from 4.57 to 5.08. with his best score of 6 coming at Oxford on 11th September.  With the Closure of Dudley Wood at the end of 1952 Derek went to Wolverhampton where he had his best season in 1953 finishing with a 6.58 average from his 26 matches with the Wolves.
He was talked into coming back to Monmore Green in 1961 when the Wolves entered the Provincial League but this was short lived when he retired after just 3 outings.
