 In 1981 Derek was named at number 8 when Rider Replacement was used for Bruce Penhall - He was not called upon to ride.

In 2000 Derek rode in two matches for Club CH at Buxton for Club CH against Southampton - he scored 10 points.  Again for Club CU at Rye House - he scored 5+1.



Derek started his speedway career with local track Boston in 1976.  With Milton Keynes and Kings Lynn in 1978 - 1980 before he joined the Heathens in May 1980.

Nicknamed Fred the Ted by Heathens fans because of his teddy-boy looks he was used in the reserve berth for most of his Cradley career.  His best score for the Heathens was at Hull in the middle of July with 11 points. With his best 'Home' performance was against the Wolves in the Dudley/Wolves Trophy match with 9+2 from 4 rides.
He moved around various tracks after leaving the Heathens including Oxford, Mildenhall, Leicester, Reading, Birmingham, Peterborough and Eastbourne.

After Cradley closed in 1996 Derek was used for two matches for Club CH.
