Richard was born in Cornwall and was a speedway supporter at Plymouth in his teens and on the Cornish grasstracks, he had his first speedway rides at Plymouth's Pennycross Stadium in 1970  and continued having second half races with them until they closed. He went to Exeter and had second half rides there but broke his collar bone.
He joined Cradley at their Dudley Wood training schools with some help from fellow Cornishman Chris Julian. He was signed by the Heathens and given a chance in the team for 6 matches in 1971 when Bob Andrews was late coming back from New Zealand.
It was tough on Richard to join a BL1 club with no previous League racing experience at the age of 19. After scoring just 3 points from his 6 matches Richard was left out of the team in April.

He went on to have one match with Birmingham in BL2 at Barrow in July 1973, then decided to retire from speedway and concentrate on Grasstrack events.

Richard still lives in Truro, Cornwall and married to Maureen who he met during his racing days worked as a building contractor, he has three children. His other love is judo and he is a black belt and examiner and senior coach up until 5 years ago. He enjoys riding his Harley Davidson and is a taskmaster with the Freemasons.
