National Shield winner: 2011 [Dudley].

Having taken his first rides on the mini-track at Swindon, he practised at Brandon Stadium, Coventry and was called up to Newport for the match against Buxton in 2009, however despite scoring a 5-1 with Sam Hurst in his first race there was a three rider pile-up in heat 8, he thought he was OK but further medical attention it was revealed that he had broken his hand.
Once he had returned to fitness he was offered a place at Newport for the 2010 season but had a change of heart and joined the Dudley Heathens at number 8. He was also signed by Swindon one day after his 16th birthday as one of their assets.

On 8th February 2011 Dudley announced that they had promoted Darryl into the team, steady scores from the reserve berth showed that Darryl had potential but on May 31st when Dudley were riding a National League home match against Hackney the Heathens had trailed 34-36 but went on to win 49-41, then they hit the Hawks with three successive 5-1s, two of them involving Ritchings who, from a reserve berth, enjoyed his best performance in the club’s famous colours. Indeed, in a key showing, he totalled an excellent 11+1 points.

He was retained by the Heathens in 2012 starting at reserve and ending with an average of more that 7 points for all his matches.

He was left out of the Dudley side for 2013, much to his dismay but the 40 point limit left it very difficult to fit him into the team.  He joined Isle of Wight among a number of other Dudley riders for the year.
