Dave Walsh was signed by Colin Pratt for Cradley at the beginning of the 1987 season. He was initially on loan from Sheffield, where he had spent the previous four years, but with an option to buy - which was indeed taken up by the Heathens in 1988.

Dave first rode Speedway at a Belle Vue training school in 1982. Before arriving at the Wood, he had been owned by Sheffield since 1983 and loaned out, first to Glasgow and Newcastle in '83, then to Berwick and Ellesmere Port in '84 and '85 respectively. He broke into the Sheffield team six weeks into the 1986 season, but moved to Cradley the following year. In his first season with the Heathens he made 46 appearances and took his average to over 5.00 - a figure good enough to earn him a full transfer in 1988. Unfortunately, the average took a tumble in that second season, not helped by a mid-season injury, nor a spell at reserve.

The decision was taken to loan Dave out to a second division team and he returned to Berwick in 1989 before being sold to the Bandits in 1990. After three seasons with the border club, he has enjoyed short spells with Glasgow, Middlesborough, Bradford, Coventry, Berwick again and Newcastle. Interestingly, a rather unfortunate record which he won't be proud of is that all of the clubs he has raced for has subsequently closed down - with the exception of Coventry! Thats another eight tracks who have disappeared, although some have re-opened since and Walshie has duly returned for another spell!
