A local lad and product of the Cradley Heath training schools, Ron had a couple of meetings in 1964 due to the Provincial League going 'black', when riders were considered to be in breach of their contract if they rode in this league. There was a big shortage of riders, Ron's debut came on a Southern League Match against Long Eaton, he had 2 rides but failed to score. The following week he was dropped in favour of Frank Holmes.
Ron was given another chance away at Newport in a Challenge Match on 26th June but again failed to score from 3 rides.
In 1965 Cradley again found themselves short of riders with the formation of the British League and found a place for Ron at the beginning of the season, he found the going tougher than ever with 1 point from his first 4 meetings.  The Cradley management persevered with him and he rode 16 meetings in 1965, his best score however was just 2 plus 1 bonus against Exeter on 12th June.
Ron was signed again for the reserve berth in 1966 and started with his career best against Newport with 4 and 1 bonus, this was short lived however and despite scoring 2 plus 1 from 3 rides at Poole on 13th April he only managed to get another 5 points in total for the rest of the season.
