Ted learned to race at the Tiger Stevenson training school at Rye House he joined Exeter in 1947 in Division 3 however he broke his leg and was unable to ride for the Falcons.  He made his official debut on the 8th April 1948 for the Heathens at Plymouth where he was again injured, he returned to the side for his only home meeting for the Heathens on 7th May 1948.
He made three more appearances for the Heathens on their Southern tour on 10th, 11th and 12th May 1948 but after scoring only two points from all these matches Ted was released and signed for Leicester in 1949 for 7 matches he then returned to Exeter for the best of his career, where he spent two seasons before moving to Southampton.
